The Bastard of Flowers

 

We watched Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale directed by Jonathan Munby at Gutherie Theater. Perdita, the princess by blood, but raised by the shepherd, calls streaked gillyvors nature’s bastards. Thus she refuses to have them in her garden. Driven by curiosity I did my research, and found that the official name for those flowers are Dianthus. They are known to the first hybrid flowers for ornamental purpose. Due to human manipulation in the creation, the purists thought lowly of those flowers.

 

I am more amused by numerous varieties of those flowers all named under Dianthus. Flowers, as human all have different faces. And all have the rights to “just to be” as we are…
